Your vivid opening image has stayed with me since I first read your story and I just re-read it today and enjoyed it once more.
Was it a fortunate combination of coincidences that brought Illya to Napoleon's apartment or was Illya set up? Or was Napoleon simply quick to act on his observations, being a nimble-witted man? (Of course, you don't need to reveal that if you prefer to keep it mysterious!)
