The comments made me realize that I had automatically assumed Napoleon was the one narrating, and now I will go back and see if I can read it and imagine Illya narrating.
This has been a wonderful read.

I read and reread this story, trying to discern who was narrating. At first, it sounded like Illya in his restless melancholy, then Napoleon with his possessive passion, but what gave it away was the narrator noting his partner's "tailored suit". I think it is Illya telling the tale.
Or maybe, you knitted their voices together. Either way, I loved it.
Thanks so much for sharing, Sandy

Was your reticence concering whose point of view this was written from on purpose? If so, bravo. The effect is hypnotizing!!!
