I have to admit that I cheated. The opening scene was so disturbing I had to make sure what was really going on before reading the rest so I scrolled to the end. Then I had to read the rest to find out how they got there. You did a really good job using Illya's POV and some vivid descriptions to pull me in and keep me guessing even knowing the end.

If my memory if right, you had this in Relative Secrecy didn't you? I always found it very moving and touching, following Illya's doubts mixed with his emotional battle. The image of him standing over "Napoleon" is powerful. I'm glad you're sharing it with more people.
